Remember Poland — Or Else
Fair warning from Dawid. I'm Polish too, but any physical threats made by me would just be pathetic.

In other news:
I haven't seen daylight since Thursday.

Our elevator is back in service, but still has a mind of its own. This morning when I tried to go up to the third floor, it bypassed the third, took me all the way up to the fifth, kept the doors closed, and then went back to the third and let me off.

I'm Naturally Awesome, But In Case You're Not:
A joke ad I saw on The Onion. It was actually for some Nike thing.

Socks:
I'm going to throw out all but one kind, and only buy them from now on. No more pairing!

Savings Cards:
Whoever came up with this idea ought to be given a really mean look.

Starbursts:
I had a dream about eating them the other night. I haven't had one since that photo class when that guy brought them with all those cameras and gave them out with the cameras but we had to give the cameras back but were allowed to eat the Starbursts.

Ted Typo. Nothing New.
Pez Man40 (8:02:29 PM): i don't like this put it needed it
Skier Wysz (8:02:57 PM): ?
Skier Wysz (8:03:29 PM): Pez Man40 (8:02:29 PM): i don't like this put it needed it
Pez Man40 (8:03:36 PM): but
Skier Wysz (8:04:06 PM): oh. amazing how you can turn a one letter typo into something so confusing

Pez Man40 (10:28:23 PM): i fixed it
Pez Man40 (10:28:30 PM): i did an add to library
Pez Man40 (10:28:35 PM): in the file menu
Skier Wysz (10:28:36 PM): just like i said
Skier Wysz (10:28:52 PM): you "fixed" it by following my instructions
Pez Man40 (10:28:52 PM): yea
Skier Wysz (10:28:54 PM): very good loser
Pez Man40 (10:28:59 PM): when did you say that
Skier Wysz (10:29:06 PM): hold on i'll open the log
Pez Man40 (10:29:11 PM): whatever
Pez Man40 (10:29:17 PM): you said to delete the folder
Skier Wysz (10:30:22 PM): Pez Man40 (8:22:31 PM): and when you go to file in itunes and go import
Pez Man40 (8:22:45 PM): i go into my drive and i can't select any of the files
Skier Wysz (8:23:05 PM): don't say import
Skier Wysz (8:23:08 PM): say add to library
Skier Wysz (8:23:20 PM): or just copy the entire music folder and replace the new one
Skier Wysz (8:23:46 PM): if you copy the entire folder it will save your playlists, etc
Skier Wysz (10:30:33 PM): there is your proof
Pez Man40 (10:31:21 PM): fine

iPod Photo Update
I looked at a 40 GB iPod Photo at the Apple Store in Towson today. The color screen looks great and the new font is much nicer to read. The photo performance is surprisingly fast. Scrolling through a library of over 1,000 photos takes only seconds in thumbnail view using the click wheel. What's even cooler is that you can also zip through the library or albums while viewing the photos full screen. They fly past with no delay as you move your thumb around the wheel. This was very impressive.

The only thing that disappointed me was how the images were resized. When iPhoto 4 resizes an image, it does a very nice job of smoothing the edges. In the images that I saw, the edges were as jagged as your favorite childhood video game. Unfortunately, the iPod Photo was not connected to a computer, so I couldn't determine the source of the problem. Maybe iPhoto/iTunes does a quick resize without smoothing when optimizing for iPod viewing. Maybe the sample images on the iPod were resized with a different program. Maybe it's the iPod's screen itself, with the low resolution and limited colors causing the jaggies.

Now that I think about it, the photos are probably resized to 640x480 for television viewing, so the iPod has to do some resizing of its own for the built-in display. Perhaps this is where the problem is introduced. I really need to see the iPod setting in iTunes so I know if there is any resizing at all before transferring, since according to Apple, you can use the iPod to store the full resolution originals.

Hopefully they'll get one connected to a demo computer soon. I'll also bring my video camera and connect it to the S-Video port on the dock, and see how the images look that way. I have to go back anyway to try out Motion, which wasn't installed on any of the store computers.

To illustrate what I saw, I resized in image in Photoshop, resampling with the "nearest neighbor" method. Again, I set the monitor to "thousands" of colors to achieve the dithering.

I had my digital camera with me and would have taken a picture of the actual display, but it wasn't loaded with my pictures and I didn't want to worry about copyright. The image I created below is a pretty accurate representation of how I remember the iPod's display.

This small issue hasn't stopped me from wanting an iPod Photo, and after some further investigation I may find a way to get around it, such as creating an iPod-optimized version of my library and syncing that. I know many people feel that photo-viewing capabilities are unnecessary and won't go for the color model until a video feature is introduced, but I'm a photo nut who can look at pictures for hours. If I get an iPod Photo, I'll be able to do this anywhere.

Wysz's Thoughts v.iPod Photo
Skip said that my my iPod entries were "thorough." Well, my coverage is about to get thorougher*. While the US page is somewhat vague about the number of high resolution photos you can store, the Singapore iPod Photo page confirms that the 25,000 is based on storage of full-resolution images:

A typical 4-minute song encoded in AAC at 128 Kbps weighs in at approximately 4MB. Compare that to the approximate 2.4MB of a 4MP digital photo. Thanks to that size difference, you can carry more than 25,000 4MP digital photos on either a 40GB or 60GB iPod Photo. If your camera captures less than 4MP of resolution, iPod Photo will accomodate even more pics. Shooting with a 6MP (or larger) camera, fewer of those higher-resolution photos will fit on iPod Photo

I'm not sure why they say that the 40GB model can hold 25,000+, because 2.4 x 25,000 ÷ 1,000 = 60. And yes, I know that 1 GB isn't really 1000 MB, plus there's formatting and software... whatever. But there you go, it stores 25,000 full resolution photos, not resized 640x480 versions. I still want to see iTunes in action with an iPod Photo so I can see what the resizing options are.

*not actually a word

Sitting Awesomely
*WHAP!*

Bill: What was that?
Me: My chair.
Bill: Your chair made that sound?
Me: I was trying to sit in it as awesome as possible.

iPod Photo Resolution
I was curious how my photos would look on an iPod Photo's small screen, so I used iPhoto to export two pictures at 220x176, the resolution of an iPod Photo display. The pictures are surprisingly detailed. Depending on your computer's display size and resolution, they may appear larger or smaller than they would on an iPod Photo, which has a 2-inch diagonal screen.

I then set my monitor's colors to "thousands" to see if I could more closely match the 65,536 color palette of the iPod Photo, and took screenshots. I wanted to specifically set the number of colors in Photoshop, but I could only figure out how to set it up to 256. As you can see, there is only minimal dithering, and it's hard to notice at this size unless you look very closely.

I'm going to go see an iPod Photo in action at an Apple Store soon, but so far it already gets my thumbs-up.

Apartment
It's always nice to see your apartment building covered in red "DANGER: LEAD HAZARD" tape. Oh and carrying my bike up and down the stairs all week has been fun. I live on the third floor.

Recent Movies
Napoleon Dynamite:
Awesome. Imagine someone as geeky as me, but add just a touch of cool. Watch the clips on the site before you go, so you know what you're getting into. Not everyone will love this movie, but I do.

Team America:
Some parts were really funny, and some weren't. If you don't catch it in the theater, at least rent it when it comes out on video. Make sure you listen to the soundtrack when you watch (or at least check it out on iTunes.)

The Forgotten:
Forget it. Forget that I'm admitting to seeing it. It wasn't my idea.

Still need to see Shawn of the Dead.

New HOTW Contest
The first person to give me a Sony HDR-FX1 wins!

Digital Box Sets
During the Special Event yesterday, Steve made a big deal about "digital box sets." This is a cool idea, but there were a couple of technicalities I felt like commenting on because I'm a nitpicky little nerd.

1. "It's impossible to have a product like this in the physical world."
- Steve Jobs referring to "The Complete U2," which would fill over 30 CDs.
No, it's not impossible. Just get a bigger box. Of course the online version saves a lot of space and packaging.

2. "Digital Music Era." etc...
Last time I checked, physical CDs are digital too. Call it the Online Music Era.

HOTW is not all about John
Stowington (3:46:31 AM): I was excited to see three HOTW updates in NetNewsWire Lite
Stowington (3:47:08 AM): only to be disappointed when I discovered that none of them were about your friendly neighbor down in N1
Skier Wysz (3:47:45 AM): so it's all about you is it?
Stowington (3:47:57 AM): well apparently not
Stowington (3:48:01 AM): it's quite a shock
Stowington (3:48:06 AM): I haven't gotten over it
Stowington (3:48:22 AM): give me a minute to collect myself
Skier Wysz (3:49:44 AM): ok

Free Pencil!
Stowington (3:30:58 PM): my absentee ballot came with a tiny pencil
Stowington (3:57:52 PM): my tiny pencil is awesome
Skier Wysz (3:58:26 PM): haha
Skier Wysz (3:58:30 PM): do you have to return it
Stowington (3:58:54 PM): I'm supposed to discard it
Stowington (3:59:00 PM): I wonder if keeping it would void my ballot
Skier Wysz (4:00:33 PM): i dont know
Skier Wysz (4:00:40 PM): but if you do keep it, sell it on ebay
Skier Wysz (4:00:50 PM): and make up for the cost of having to mail your ballot
Stowington (4:04:36 PM): well that won't be hard
Stowington (4:04:43 PM): it doesn't cost me anything
Skier Wysz (4:05:43 PM): I HAD TO BUY A STAMP

Last of the Willis updates for now
Wesley Willis is no longer in the top 10 on the Greek store.

Quality
Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's is currently fluctuating between 9th and 10th on the Greek store.

After Bill suggested that Willis's songs may be "formulaic," I remembered what I did when William Hung was #1 on the US store. I went to Apple's Music Event stream from a little over a year ago (October 16th, 2003) and went about 11 minutes into Steve's speech.

"By the end of this month, we'll have 400,000 quality tracks. This number could have easily been much higher if we wanted to let in every song. But we realized that record companies, the music companies, do a great service. They edit. Did you know that if you and I record a song, for 40 bucks we can pay a few of the services to get it on their site through some intermediaries? We can be on Rhapsody, we can be on all these other guys for 40 bucks. But we don't want to let that stuff on our site. And so we've had to edit it. And these are 400,000 quality songs."

Here's a clip, in case Apple's stream is taken down. They don't link to it on the Apple Events QuickTime page anymore, so it might be on its way out.

In other music news, the first person to give me both a U2 iPod (looks really cool) and an iPod Photo (60 GB model, please), wins!

Crazy Greeks
So I just signed into the Greek iTunes Music Store for fun, and noticed that the 10th most downloaded song so far was "Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's" by Wesley Willis. We used to listen to his stuff in the Media Lab for comedic inspiration.

Wesley Willis
Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's has moved up to #9 in the Greek store. Keep me posted if you notice any more changes.

Old School
In one of the offices at school today, I saw a RadioShack TRS-80. It wasn't tucked away on a shelf; it was actually sitting on a desk with a chair in front of it. Kinda weird, but if it gets the job done, that's cool.

Training Hotmail's Junk Filter
Thursday, October 21, 2004

Spammed by the Post Office
I did use one of these things this summer back home. It was nice. Post office without the postal workers. Not that I have anything against postal workers... they just have a bad rep. But what am I supposed to do about this junk? It's like how you can't block the "buy our paid service" messages in Hotmail.

Tigers of the Amazon
I don't usually report Mac rumor material on this blog, but I want to say something about this "Amazon has secret info. and leaked the Tiger release date" thing. The first ship date was March 31, 2005, which was right in the middle of Apple's "first half of 2005" announced release date. All the sites reported this date, some skeptically, as the release date of Tiger. Amazon later pulled the product and release date from their site.

Today, MacMinute reported that Amazon has now posted Tiger with a release date of June 30th, 2005. Their headline is "Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger due on June 30, 2005?" I think someone should hand them a calendar and point out that June 30th is simply the last day of "first half of 2005," so Amazon is promising a date that they should be able to deliver.

Bill's Shoes
RSS on a Mac
DrunkenBlog has managed to interview the authors of the top five news aggregators for Mac. They discuss why Mac users and developers are so far ahead of the Windows world in adopting RSS, and also share their thoughts on Safari RSS, which will be included with Mac OS X Tiger.

If you haven't started using RSS yet, you should give it a try. I use NetNewsWire on my Mac, but the others mentioned in the interview are good as well. I especially like NewsFire's interface.Try out the "Lite" versions and decide which one you like best.

If you're stuck on a PC, good luck, but I think Tony told me that FeedDemon is pretty good.

Don't Let The Cat Out Of The Bag

Speaking of cats, I recently was able to successfully call one to an iMac using iChat AV, although I'm not sure if this counts, since he thinks he's a dog. He even plays fetch.

Apple Store, Christiana Mall Update
I drove 60 miles from Baltimore to Newark, DE tonight to check out the location of the new Apple Store in the Christiana Mall. I found it on the first floor, and took a peek inside through the glass. It is the typical mall setup, identical to the other mall-based Apple Stores that I've been to at KOP and Towson. This will be the third Apple Store I have visited. In addition to the two I just mentioned, I have also been to the SoHo store.

The store was dark except for the LCD screens of the various computers, all of which were turned on and running demos. The Genius Bar screen was also on. A large number of small boxes were piled behind the cashier's desk; perhaps they contain the t-shirts that will be given away to the first 1,000 visitors. Yes, that's one thousand, not one hundred. At first I assumed that I must have misread the number when I read it earlier, but Google's cache confirms that as of October 12, the number really was 100. I suppose that I don't need to get there super early to be within the first 1,000, but I did go to the KOP store about lunchtime on its birthday, and by the time I got there, all of the t-shirts were gone and they still had a cop standing outside watching us crazy Apple people. KOP also gave away 1,000 shirts and apparently there was an hour wait at 10 AM. I think I'll get there between 7 and 8. I noticed red velvet ropes in the corner, so they're ready for a line. Before leaving the mall, I found the closest entrance (Food Court) so I can wait in the best location. I have two cameras (still and video) loaded and ready to go so I can document the experience.

Well, I'm going to take a nap for an hour or so before heading back to Delaware. The next blog entry should report my successful acquisition of a free t-shirt.

Grand Opening of The Apple Store, Christiana Mall, Newark, DE!
I've documented my experience on this page. Check it out!

I Voted Before You Did
My absentee ballot arrived today. Every aspect of it is labeled "official."

The envelope I received it in, as well as the return envelope are labeled "Official Election Mail" and "Official Election Balloting Material." The envelope that contains the ballot itself is official. The front and back of the ballot have "Official" headings.

I also got a separate envelope from the Elephant Party, even though I'm registered as No Affiliation. They thanked me for requesting an absentee ballot, let me know that nearly 1/3 of the ballots are never returned, and then provided a list of the Republican candidates. One of the included fliers is for Bernie O'Neill, and his campaign material includes a place for you to keep track of Important Phone Numbers such as Poison Control and Pizza.

I like this absentee process. I think I'll just plan on being absent for every election so I don't have to deal with lines, surly election officials, or people in general.

Making Fun of the Guy Who Pays Half of the Rent
Bill just walked in wearing a suit. Frat guys dressing up is just like when athletes do it. Doesn't quite work. This is the same man who earlier today repaired his sneakers with duct tape. You know what, while we're making fun of Bill, I just have to say that listening to him sing is like Strong Mad attempting to perform opera.

Baltimore is a dirt city.
And that's all I have to say about that.

Marty Katz
Today in photography class we had photographer Marty Katz stop by and talk to us about his job and show some of his work. He showed us images from his most recent assignment: photographing oysters for a New York Times article. The article hasn't been published yet, but I'll see if I can find a link to it tomorrow. He was interesting to listen to, and he also gave some good advice, like letting us know that drug dealers don't like photographers.

I don't usually write about my classes, but this one was cool because at the time Marty was also testing digital cameras for Wired Magazine. He passed out all of the cameras and let us shoot with them. I definitely need to get a digital SLR with all manual controls. I knew this before today, but now that I've actually used them, I really want one.

Here is a list of the cameras, but I don't think all of them were being tested:
Canon EOS 20D
Nikon Coolpix 5200, D2H, and D70
Sony L1 and V3
Casio S100 and P600

The Canon 20D and the Nikon D2H were really nice. Marty seemed to prefer Canon over Nikon, so I'll probably go Canon. I think the Digital Rebel might be a good choice for me, but I have to do some more research.

Why Am I Here?
I'm trying to figure out how I got accepted to Johns Hopkins. Here are a few possibilities:

- Computer glitch.
- The fact that my middle name is John.
- Some sort of sick joke, or possibly a dare.
- Affirmative action.
- Tony's suggestion: "Counterbalance."

Re: Apple Store Grand Opening
If anyone knows about or has been to Apple Store grand openings before, could you please let me know when I should get there so I can get a t-shirt? It's within a mall, which opens at 10 AM, the same time as the store.

Someone must have taken my Dr. Wyszomierski email address seriously
The management of my apartment building appreciates my patients. I didn't know I had any.

Observation
At 4 PM, I passed two women talking on a staircase in one of the buildings on campus. They were speaking in a foreign language. At 5 PM, when I returned to the building to drop something off, they were still there, talking on the same stairs as before, in the same positions. This time, however, they were speaking in English.

THIS IS IT
I'm posting this then shutting down the computer and going home. I mean it.

Prizes not shown to scale. Thanks for clearing that up.

If I were any more awesome, I'd be ruled unconstitutional.
Hi kids.

Sorry I didn't update for a couple of days; I was sick. If you want to hear the details, ask me. I'm back in the land of the living, but I'm going home for the weekend so this is it for your update.

Emergency Update
I know I said that the previous post was "it" for your update, but I just had to blog this before I left. Bill just told me of a conversation he had on the phone yesterday that illustrates the benefits of being listed as Wysz, The in the Baltimore phone book:

Ring ring.
Bill: Hello?
??: Hi, is this Mr. Wysz?
Bill: No.
??: Is Mr. Wysz there?
Bill: No.
??: Is Mrs. Wysz there?
Bill: No.
??: Okay, thanks. I'll call back later.

Mrs. Wysz! I got a kick out of that. And isn't it sexist that they always ask for Mr. Wysz first?

How do you capture the attention of the Asian-American youth population?
Martial arts and spaceships.

While we're on the subject, I went to school with this guy. His website has a plethora of information, including his favorite wallet brand.

Disclaimer:
I am not a racist, I have many Asian-American friends, I studied abroad in Asia for 2 semesters, I'm 1/16 Asian, et-cetera.

Pump Me Up
Have you ever been to a gas station where you stand outside your car and watch while the attendant pumps the gas? I know that New Jersey drivers aren't trusted to pump gas themselves, but from what I've seen they generally stay in the vehicle.

Don't bother reading any further
Why do I keep saying things after I've typed them in AIM?

Why did I feel it was necessary to blog this?

Ruptured
Bill and I just discussed the pros and cons of me swallowing a $10 roll of quarters. The most significant con was "possibility of death," and my favorite pro was that doctors would probably have an opportunity to use the term "ruptured" when discussing my case.

I have decided not to swallow the roll sitting on my desk, and I forbid myself from handling it when bored or curious.

Some Ads I've Seen
Am I the only one who thinks the "before" picture looks better?

And would you trust a doctor who can't spell?

What is so hard about days of the week? Wednesday, maybe, but Saturday and Thursday? Come on! I took this last picture in Hilton Head:

One Year Ago Today
This craziness started. Ah, the memories...

A Big Dorky Nerd
Ted trying to explain why it seems like we're always doing laundry, even if it's only every few weeks:

Skier Wysz (7:24:09 PM): i said i do laundry every 2-3 weeks
Pez Man40 (7:24:24 PM): yes same here
Pez Man40 (7:24:31 PM): but it seems like i am always doing it
Pez Man40 (7:25:35 PM): is that due to the fact that laundry is such a huge process that it never really leaves your conscious thinking
Skier Wysz (7:25:54 PM): you ARE thinking about it too much
Skier Wysz (7:26:02 PM): just look at your last quote
Skier Wysz (7:26:11 PM): it is blogworthy
Pez Man40 (7:26:17 PM): well i over analyze everything why not laundry
Pez Man40 (7:26:38 PM): someone should
Pez Man40 (7:26:52 PM): why not me
Pez Man40 (7:27:08 PM): mikey i have been analyzing everything really
Pez Man40 (7:27:18 PM): i am becoming a big dorky nerd
Pez Man40 (7:27:23 PM): even more than usual
Pez Man40 (7:27:28 PM): i don't know how but i am
Pez Man40 (7:27:43 PM): and i am lost on how to get out of this rut

Skytyping
On the way home from New York today, we saw something strange in the sky. As we got closer, we saw that it was a group of these guys writing on the blue sky. Five planes were typing out something about a "Greek Challenge." It was hard to see from our angle, but they were writing the message in a circle. By the time they would go around once, the first part of the message had dissipated. Here are a couple pictures I snapped from the window:

Sara, who is smarter than me, on her birthday:
"What's today's date?"

Actually, I wasn't even thinking about it at all...
Sara (8:45:01 PM): so you have to study now? it would not kill you to start now
Sara (8:45:11 PM): because i know you're thinking its not even 9:00
Skier Wysz (8:45:33 PM): haha
Skier Wysz (8:45:46 PM): i think i might take a little nap so i'm not studying tired
Sara (8:45:52 PM): ohhh ok
Skier Wysz (8:46:18 PM): see i thought this through

Email from The Duder
So I think since you have been so lax in updating your blog, you should change the heading of your page to "Home of the Wysz v. Suck". I would have left this as an IM, but ur not online.  Are you still going home every weekend?

your loving friend,
Blake
