One Thousand
This is the 1,000th entry in Wysz's Thoughts v.Awesome. It's been a crazy ride so far. A crazy ride like the one I saw today. As I was driving home, I saw a guy driving a car filled with junk and with a broken windshield through a field. This was less than a minute after I watched a construction worker attempt to do a headstand on a paper cup with a plastic spoon in his mouth.

As always, I'm awesome. Here's to the next thousand, kids. Cheers.

.Mac Exclusive Widgets
Tiger was released over a month ago, and at the same time, Apple announced that .Mac members would receive exclusive access to additional Dashboard widgets. They're still not available, and the .Mac home page just claims that they're "coming soon."

Despite this annoyance, I still encourage everyone to get a .Mac subscription (the Family Pack is a good deal) to fully enjoy Tiger.

Free Time

More TV Shows You Should Buy
New Apple Student Gallery item
My song "Encore" joins my movie "Foolproof" in Apple's Student Gallery. Remember to vote.

Mork & Mindy!
I was visiting my cousin for her graduation, and saw that one of her roommates had Mork & Mindy on the shelf. That's right, you can get Mork & Mindy on DVD! And remember, if you buy 50, you'll have 50 times the fun!

Tomorrow
I'm going to take a picture and maybe see a movie. Or, maybe I'll just sleep. I love summer.

Entry #997

[pauses, smiles because he thinks he is the first to make the joke] Because you know Canada is the 51st state anyway. Well, 52nd. I think Puerto Rico would be a state first.

Drunks
John Stowe: drunk people sure are loud when they're in the hallway
Michael Wyszomierski: yeah they are annoying
John Stowe: and they're still audible when they're in the apartment next door
John Stowe: she couldn't have seen him at graduation because he was sick that day
John Stowe: but she may not remember correctly because she was still hung over when she went
Michael Wyszomierski: haha

Getting Greedy
Since I keep so many entries on the front page of my blog, it's hard to come up with enough content for the sidebar. Until today, only about half of it had content, leaving the rest of the page with an empty white line next to the entries. Well don't worry, I'm always looking for more ways to entertain my readers, so I've added some Amazon.com links to the bottom. Yep, I finally signed up for their referral program. So, get clicking and order a copy of Tiger before the end of the month and take advantage of their unbeatable rebate. You get $35 off the Single Client and $50 off the Family Pack!

Announced Hiatus
After tonight/early this morning, I won't be blogging again until Monday at the earliest. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Another Look - Archive.org remix
My final project for Lost & Found Film (also known as "orphaned films") is called "Another Look." I've finally gotten around to putting it on the Internet, so you can watch it here.

All of the content was taken from films freely available on Internet Archive. I then gave it back.

Here's some commentary on the film that you don't have to read:
The audio for the first part (everything before the bottles) was created by cutting together six different songs from the various films.

The mouth in the upper right corner is a loop and superimposed over the background with an oval mask. The film in the lower right is sped up, and the black background of the set is keyed out. The films on the right are sped up as well (one at 1,000% and one at 2,000) and were chosen simply because they look cool sped up (lots of landscapes and motion).

The segment with the kids and the fence plays with motion and composition. The fact that both clips contain children wasn't intentional, but it works with the music.

The slowmo and freeze frames of the following three characters are an inside joke. They appear in "A Date With Your Family," which became a favorite of the film class. I wanted to bring them back for one last cameo. The same is true with the clip of the bike riders. It's hard to tell in this shot, but everyone in my class knew that it was people wearing monkey masks — one of the oddest sights we came across during the semester. I just had to give it "another look."

The stuttering of the audio and video at the end of the song is intentional, and I used it both as a way to transition to the next piece and also to represent the idea that this is the last time these images are being seen, as the film deteriorates and the projector has trouble with it.

The idea of deterioration continues into the next segment, as the sound is created by looping and manipulating a small segment of audio from "The ABC of Walking Wisely" in which the audio becomes distorted and makes a weird buzz. The visual of the bottles is another loop that I created, and starts off with a strobe effect before its speed is changed to match the layering of the buzz sound, which is also played at different speeds. The blip that you hear at about one second intervals is actually part of the loop and not created intentionally. I decided not to cut it out, and used each blip to show one frame that I found interesting. For some of the shots, I cropped them into a different composition than the original shot.

The image of the car rising up through the smoke is from an amazing film from GM called "A Touch of Magic." The synthesizer sound is from a military film about relocating to Germany. I manipulated and layered it quite a bit. Once the image becomes blurred, the rest of the segment entertains the idea of abstract art and tries to illustrate the fact that the content or meaning of the film isn't always important, and it can be just as satisfying to simply enjoy the way an image looks. The actual images are distorted and composited animations from the various films.

The final shot of the girl in the water is another inside joke. My professor is convinced that it is a very sad image, and I think he likes it because it's sad. I tried in one of my films to put it in a happy context, but failed. I figured I'd let him have one more look. The audio is static from one of the films. I looped it at various speeds and layered it. The brightness increases and the contrast decreases as the static becomes more intense. Again, this is about deterioration. That's all, folks.

Despite how complex this sounds, the final timeline was actually pretty simple, although some of the items are nested. Take a look.

Jack is Back!
After an unannounced 3-week hiatus, As the Apple Turns is now broadcasting a new episode. Enjoy.

Making me dumber by the minute
Ted Skuchas: it says that the capacity exceeds the disc
Michael Wyszomierski: well then that means it's too long
Michael Wyszomierski: i think idvd is limited to 2 hours
Ted Skuchas: well then how do i cut it back
Michael Wyszomierski: how do you make the movie shorter?
Michael Wyszomierski: cut out the parts you don't like?
Ted Skuchas: no
Ted Skuchas: make it so it can fit on one disc
Michael Wyszomierski: i told you
Michael Wyszomierski: idvd is limited to 2 hours
Ted Skuchas: so then what do i have to do to make it fit
Michael Wyszomierski: make it less than 2 hours
Ted Skuchas: uhhhhh
Ted Skuchas: you are so worthless to me
Michael Wyszomierski: well you can go through all this trouble, but you're on your own
Michael Wyszomierski: 2 hour limit means TWO HOUR LIMIT
Michael Wyszomierski: cut out the credits
Michael Wyszomierski: how long is it now
Ted Skuchas: it says the dv d is full
Michael Wyszomierski: how long is the frickin movie
Ted Skuchas: hold on
Ted Skuchas: 2 hours and 5 minutes
Michael Wyszomierski: ok, now is 2 hours and 5 minutes more or less than two hours?

Paperwork
How much paperwork does it take to sign up for an internship at JHU? This much:

The registrar needed to get my SSN (which, by the way is not supposed to be used for ID), address, phone number, email address, class, major, and other data that they have only asked from me about 4,000 times since I enrolled.

A Nerd's Worst Nightmare
Tonight Conan explained that a nerd's worst nightmare was a jock who knows as much about Star Wars as a nerd. Who did I immediately think of? Ted.

FYI
Im'a be in Baltimore on Friday and Saturday, so if you need to give me money or something, that would be a good time. Oh, and we could hang out I guess. If you pay me.

SPOILERS!
Anakin becomes Darth Vader!

Padmé has not one, but TWO babies in this flick! Luke and Leia. I'm sure we'll see them again in Episode IV. For some reason it looked like she went from "I'm pregnant" to "Oh, look, there are my babies" in a lot less than nine months, but I have a very poor perception of time in movies.

Oh, and the girl working at the theater came into the auditorium to be rude for Absolutely no reason™. I think Ted was going to ask for her number.

Later, kids.

Google Video Uploader now compatible with Mac and Linux
If you're like me and have video that you haven't sent to Google because of their lack of Mac (or Linux) support, you'll be pleased to know that an uploader utility is now available for Mac OS X and Linux, thanks to R.P. Hughes. I've already uploaded Foolproof, complete with a timecoded transcript.

I got an internship and I'm going to get credit for it. That's one more random class I won't have to take next year.

The Interview
Reneelet: hey i saw you got your internship
Reneelet: did they ask anything hard?
Michael Wyszomierski: nope
Michael Wyszomierski: well the one guy asked me where i saw myself in 5 years
Michael Wyszomierski: so i said "probably in prison"
Michael Wyszomierski: i think that's what got me the job
Reneelet: no u didnt!
Michael Wyszomierski: yeah i didn
Michael Wyszomierski: tt
Michael Wyszomierski: i said "i hope to have your job"

Michael Wyszomierski: that could be a problem
Bill Speier: ok, no one over 6'8"

Too Much Spam
I don't get too much spam, even though my email address is all over the Internet with no fancy wysz [at] mac DOT com protection. This is thanks to .Mac's filtering. Any spam that I do receive is usually caught by Mail's filter, but it is still annoying because I do check my junk mail folder.

To help Apple out, I report all junk mail to spam@mac.com by forwarding it with the full header fields intact. For the past couple of days, I've received this error after forwarding an unsolicited email:

Your message cannot be delivered to the following recipients:

Recipient address: spam@ims-ms-daemon
Original address: spam@mac.com
Reason: Over quota

I didn't know that Apple had a quota on their own accounts. I guess the spam analysis has been backed up lately because of that worm which infected Windows computers last weekend. Thanks, Windows users.

iTMS Feedback
Since my Slashdotting and recent popularity of the "Downloadable Videos" iMix, I've been receiving a lot of email about iTunes. I have learned that I am not the only one who accidently purchased the song on the Gorillaz album instead of the entire album, which is the same price since it's a single. I wanted to suggest to Apple that they make all items on a single "Album Only" to prevent this, but when I went to the usual feedback page, I found that it is now only for music requests. Let me know if you find a more appropriate place for me to send feedback. I don't see a customer support page that fits this request.

Apple Retail Fans Line Up in front of Wrong Store
NEW YORK — Fans of Apple Computer, Inc.'s growing chain of its own retail stores are camping out in New York's Flatiron District ahead of an opening of a new store. Unfortunately for them, this new store is not owned by Apple, and most likely will not sell computers.

As of Friday, three people were lined up outside of a building on Fifth Avenue. The storefront is covered by a plywood facade, and sounds of construction can be heard from behind the barrier. John Slightman, a freelance programmer from Queens, says that he heard about the upcoming store from ifoAppleStore.com, a website completely dedicated to Apple's retail stores. According to the website, the upcoming Flatiron store was discovered when Apple posted a job listing for that location on its website. "Nobody knew the exact location [of the store]," said Slightman, "We just knew it was somewhere in Flatiron, so I started keeping my eyes open." According to Slightman, he determined that he had found the store when he noticed the plywood facade and observed construction workers entering who refused to say what they were building. Apple is known for its secrecy with unannounced products and even stores, so a secretive construction crew made sense to Slightman, who soon took his place as the coveted "first in line" for the store's opening.

After one of Slightman's friends mentioned the location on his blog, a couple from New Jersey, Alex Zandin and Kelly Paron, joined Slightman in line. They had only been waiting for about an hour when the location's destiny as an Apple Store came into question. Zandin explained, "[Slightman's] only reason for believing that this was the Apple Store was the fact that a contractor wouldn't tell him what the store was going to be. That's not exactly the equivalent of confirming that it's going to be an Apple Store."

Janice Alars, a retailing expert from the Brand It! consulting firm, could find no evidence that the location was in any way associated with Apple Computer or retail property lessors that it has leased from in the past. While she couldn't rule out the possibility of this being the site of the upcoming Flatiron Apple Store, she indicated that her research into the size, location, and value of the space indicates that the business it will house is most likely a Starbucks.

Despite the probability that they are waiting outside of the wrong store, the fans don't plan on moving anytime soon. "It's not about the store," Slightman suggests, "We're here for the experience. Mac users look at these openings as a chance to socialize and talk about how their lives mix with Apple. We've all been to an Apple Store before, and this one doesn't promise to be anything new. I doubt I will even buy anything on opening day."

When it comes to these Apple enthusiasts, even Gary Allen, webmaster of ifoAppleStore.com, is perplexed. "We've never seen anything like this," says Gary, "Someone camped out a couple of days before the Regent Street opening [in London], but that was the first European store, and it was huge. The people waiting in Flatiron don't even know when it's opening. They could be waiting for months."

Those outside of the Apple community find it hard to believe that people line up for every grand opening, especially since the stores will contain products that the fans have already seen. According to those waiting it out, the only material incentive for being first is a free t-shirt with the name of the store printed on it. Line up now, as t-shirt giveaways are usually limited to the first 1,000 customers.

Transatlantic Video Chat
After a couple of failed attempts, Ted and I were able to have a video chat, even though he is in London and I'm in Baltimore. Nice to have a chance to make fun of him before we hang out next week.

1001
Tony encouraged me to try out a new Flickr upload utility called 1001. After a five minute test, Flickr Uploadr went "poof" and 1001 got the honor of the "Keep In Dock" command. The beta expires in July, and hopefully it won't turn into something expensive. If the price is reasonable, however, I will pay for good software. Photos can be added from files in the Finder or by dragging directly from iPhoto (and certain other apps that support drag and drop).

1001 allows you to add titles, tags, and descriptions to any or all of your photos before uploading, and even lets you assign them to your sets (or create new ones) and specify the privacy level. 1001 also includes basic editing features such as rotate, scale, and JPEG conversion, but I have not tested the editing features, so I cannot say anything about their quality.

In addition to all this uploading goodness. It also provides notification of new photos uploaded by your contacts or everyone, or photos with specific tags. Another bonus included in the download is a screensaver which displays the latest image from Flickr.

Of course, to use 1001, you need Mac OS X.

Dictionaries in Tiger
It looks like the spelling dictionary in Tiger is not in sync with the new Dictionary and Thesaurus included with the system. For example, type the word "filmic" in an application that uses OS X's spell-checker. It's not a word, is it? Right-click (control-click) on the word and choose "Look Up in Dictionary." Ah-ha!

Network down (again)
Most of the Hopkins network (jhu.edu, johnshopkins.edu, hopkinsmedicine.org, jhsph.edu, jhuccp.org, etc.) is completely unresponsive tonight. Since all of jhu.edu is down, services such as JHEM (email), WebCT (used for many courses to submit assignments), and JHUNIX (essential for compsci courses), are inaccessible. At a time when final papers and projects are due, and exam materials and course readings from the library need to be accessed by a bunch of students trying to get into med school, this is one of the things that you don't want to happen.

Fortunately, I don't really need to get to it tonight. I just wanted to check my email and see if any more grades were posted.

Tiger Tip from John
John Stowe: you know what's even cooler than right clicking for dictionary lookups
John Stowe: hold down apple-control-d and any word you mouse over gets defined

Who are you?
I feel weird doing this, but I'm not the first person on the Internet to post found pictures. After having the apartment for nine months, I finally looked on the top cabinet of our porch thingy tonight. The only thing up there, covered in dust, was this photograph. Does anyone know these people? Do they want their picture back? Let me know.

iTunes 4.8
I downloaded iTunes 4.8 today, and added a few videos to my library. At first I could only figure out how to play the audio, just like with previous versions, unless I selected the option to play videos in a separate window or full screen. Then, by accident, I figured out what I had been doing wrong for the main window option. To view video content in the main window, you must make sure that you are displaying album art in iTunes. You can select Show artwork from the Edit menu, or in the bottom left of the window, click on the fourth icon from the left.

iTunes Music Store now selling videos
Check it out, the iTunes Music Store is now selling videos, in the U.S. store at least:

Screenshots available here.

As of this writing, they offer no preview, and their times are listed as zero, which they obviously are not.

Too bad I accidently bought the single song first and then had to buy the album again to try the videos. They show up in the "Purchased Music" playlist just like any other song, and behave in the same way that videos imported from your hard drive do, with the option to play them in the "Album Art" box, in a separate window, or full screen. My purchase history indicates that I was able to do this as of 9:20 PM tonight.

I have not yet had a chance to test if movies can be shared via Bonjour. I did transfer one of the files to another (non-authorized) computer via another method, and it plays, meaning there is no DRM. Very interesting. The videos do not transfer to iPods.

I've published an iMix containing a listing of all the albums which have downloadable videos. If you think this is a useful iMix, please vote for it. Email me if you find one I missed.

Well, I have to get back to work, so I'll point you to the MacRumors article, which I'm sure will be updated with more information about this new service throughout the night.

This post for Bill
This will keep you busy for the five minutes it takes you to find a solution, nerd.

/.ed! For real!
I've been Slashdotted! And not the "Wysz writes" kind (although I did send it in) — I am actually linked to in the article! Also, please note that the videos are not actually encoded in 3ivx.

One more week
If you are responsible for filling all four washers downstairs and then leaving your clothes in there after the cycle finished, I am very angry with you right now.

It just gets better and better
Finally, I can connect my iPod and not have to deal with iSync popping up and taking its time to sync my calendars and contacts. It's about time they built this into iTunes. Very nice.

O ooo
Michael Wyszomierski: so video support in itunes 4.8... i sure hope they start selling family guy
John Stowe: o
John Stowe: ooo
Michael Wyszomierski: yeah
Michael Wyszomierski: worst case scenario we now have a good way to organize videos
Michael Wyszomierski: but i'm sure this will have some connection to the music store

./'ed!
Michael Wyszomierski: i wonder if slashdot worries about being HOTW'd and exceeding its bandwidth
Brendan Houle: haha. i'm sure that's at least one of their top 10 concerns.

Brendan Houle: why does your post say ./ed instead of /.ed
Brendan Houle: you were dotslashed?
Michael Wyszomierski: ugh i was so excited i screwed it up
Michael Wyszomierski: i'll fix it

Doughnuts, used cars, and iTunes
Michael Wyszomierski: oooh look at me! i'm the itunes music store! i have videos for sale! tomorrow i will sell donuts and used cars!
csvroomfondel: what?
Michael Wyszomierski: umm, it is including videos with some albums, doesn't seem to be fully operational yet (no previews) but you can download them with purchase
csvroomfondel: only with the purchase?
Michael Wyszomierski: yes
Michael Wyszomierski: like those PDF extras that started with the U2 mega album thing
csvroomfondel: i'm still waiting to be able to download snacks
csvroomfondel: heck, you asked for downloadable pepsi 2 years ago, and they haven't done anything with that

I really did ask. (from WOC)

Long boring analysis of the CNBC clip on Apple's website

Michael Wyszomierski: yes today
John Stowe: I'm watching it now
Michael Wyszomierski: you will like the reporter's "personally..." comment
John Stowe: I must have missed it
Michael Wyszomierski: he says something like spyware isn't on macs because of their low marketshare
John Stowe: (plus you need a chance to blog it)
John Stowe: oh yeah that
John Stowe: he didn't say personally
John Stowe: I like the car analogy
Michael Wyszomierski: not only is it inaccurate, it is oddly placed and not explained
John Stowe: complete with compelling visuals
Michael Wyszomierski: haha yeah, i think one of the producers just wanted a chance to drive his car around on tv
John Stowe: and so did the construction workers
Michael Wyszomierski: what does he say then. honestly?
John Stowe: oh yeah
John Stowe: but honestly, with only 3.3% market share...
Michael Wyszomierski: ok i think the producer was a woman
Michael Wyszomierski: ok
Michael Wyszomierski: hmm
Michael Wyszomierski: ok maybe they used file footage
Michael Wyszomierski: a woman turns the key
John Stowe: I think Jim Goldman is a PC guy
Michael Wyszomierski: a man changes gears

I have received several unsolicited emails from info@aceprintwear.com at one of my addresses. There's no unsubscribe link in the email, but a phone number is listed on all of the emails, along with text in big red letters that reads: "Call Us Today!"

Tonight I called, and to my surprise, someone answered.

APW: Hello?
WYSZ: Is this Ace Printwear?
APW: Yes, it is.
WYSZ: I've been receiving unsolicited emails from you, and I'd like to be removed from the list. Could I give you my email address?
APW: Sure, hold on a sec, let me write it down. Okay.
WYSZ: [I spell out the address]
APW: [asks for clarification of a letter]
WYSZ: [clarifies]
APW: Wow, that's a long email address.
WYSZ: Yeah, I don't know where you guys got it.
APW: Well, I'll get you off of the list. You may get the next one, but that should be it. It might take us a while to look this up.
WYSZ: Thank you.
APW: You have a good weekend.
WYSZ: You too.

Attention: Tiger Owners
I really want to try out a mulit-way video chat. Has anyone discovered a better approach than "would you like to try a 3-way?"

iChat à Trois
I don't know why it's so blurry, but it probably has something to do with either my Internet connection or my computer, since I hosted the conference. I'm on a 1GHz DP G4 with a GeForce4 MX video card and Verizon DSL. I'm not sure of the exact speed on Verizon; I have whatever their cheapest package is. I looked at some Flickr photos tagged with "iChat" and found some shots that resemble the quality I experienced, and other shots that have noticeably better clarity. If anyone would like to give me a G5 so I can, um, experiment, I'll be happy to take it and post the results as long as I get to keep the equipment.

Michael Wyszomierski: well my time is now split between my blog and flickr
John Stowe: haha

Towson Best Buy — Now accepting $2 bills!
Remember how I said that I was going to go to Best Buy and pay for something with a $2 bill to see what would happen? Well today Brendan and I needed to pick up a VHS tape, so we decided to hit the Best Buy up by Towson. Yes, this is the Best Buy. The one where the guy got arrested.

Manning the cash register was an employee in training, who hadn't yet earned her blue uniform. Her trainer was standing right behind her watching. The pack of tapes cost between six and seven dollars, so I calmly handed over a five and a two. The girl didn't react at all when she saw the bill, but before she could do anything, the trainer snatched it from her hand without a word (she didn't appear to be amused) and took it to the other counter, where Brendan observed her using one of those counterfeit detection markers to determine the legitimacy of the bill. She then brought it back to the trainee, who completed the sale without further incident.

RSS Visualizer
One of the new screensavers included with Tiger is an RSS visualizer, which, thanks to Quartz Extreme, displays the RSS feed of your choice in a smooth animation of the headlines along with some text from the body of the entry.

Bookmark your favorite feed in Safari, and then follow these instructions to try it out. It doesn't support images (yet), but it's still pretty cool, and an excellent show-off tool when you're around Windows-using friends. By the way, I resized these graphics using Automator. I created a workflow that asks for the files, copies them to a new location (so the originals aren't messed with), resizes them to 400 pixels wide, and then converts them to JPEG. The originals were full-screen TIFF files from Grab, so this process saved me a few steps.

Computer Forum Video
Today on ifo Apple Store, I saw a link to this video (Quicktime 7 required) by Jim Sowden of the Tiger World Premiere event at MacOutfitters in Doylestown, PA. Looks like I missed out on a good party, but there was no way I could have made it from Baltimore to Doylestown before they closed.

iChat 3 and Virex don't mix
Tried out iChat on Tiger and got an unbearably low frame rate? Uninstall Virex! That is all.

Obligatory Tiger Blog Entry
I went to the Tiger World Premiere. Four times.
I installed Tiger.
I like Tiger.

I am really busy right now with two weeks left of school, so I will have to tell you more about it later.
