The Deal With RSS
Abstract:
How/why I use it.
Body:
I wrote this for Blake, but then I figured some
of you might not really know why I like RSS, so here we
go:
Skier Wysz
(1:39:23 AM): ok the deal with
RSS... the way i use
it
Skier Wysz (1:39:32
AM): i have NetNewsWire, which is
Mac-only
ShkenBlke2
(1:39:37 AM):
ok
Skier
Wysz (1:39:48 AM): i keep it open
all the time in the background, without any windows
open
Skier Wysz
(1:39:53 AM): it just sits in my
dock
Skier Wysz
(1:40:05 AM): and every 30 min,
scans my rss
subscriptions
ShkenBlke2
(1:40:11 AM):
ok
Skier
Wysz (1:40:31 AM): if one of the
sites is updated, the icon displays a number to indicate how many new entries
there are
ShkenBlke2
(1:40:38 AM):
ah
ShkenBlke2
(1:40:55 AM): so it is
amazingly cooler like almost everything else on
macs
Skier Wysz
(1:40:58 AM): from there, if i right
click on the icon, i can see which sites are updated, and what the headlines
are
Skier Wysz
(1:41:19 AM): and decide if i want
to read any of them, or just mark them as read and reset the
counter
Skier Wysz
(1:41:32 AM): so instead of checking
everyone's site 50 times a
day
Skier Wysz
(1:41:42 AM): i know within a half
hour or less if something new is on the
net
Skier Wysz
(1:41:53 AM): and i waste no time
checking unupdated
sites
ShkenBlke2
(1:42:08 AM): th@ kinda takes
the whole fun outa procrastinating though, th@ means i'd actually have to do
work more
often
ShkenBlke2
(1:42:15 AM): its a double
edged sword 4
sure
Skier Wysz
(1:42:41 AM): yeah, it makes your
procrastination more efficient i
suppose
ShkenBlke2
(1:42:56 AM): now th@s an
oxymoron if i've ever heard one
