After it's established that The "Orient" comes from an older meaning of the word, which is "east," trying to illustrate that it relies on the assumption of Europe being normal:
Instructor: East of what?
Student: The Middle East?

Later, after showing a silent film. Note that this is a 300-level film course:
Student: It's like a book with visuals in between!
Instructor: Yes, it's a silent film and those are called inter-titles.
