Marty Katz

Abstract:
Professional photographer and professional cameras.

Body:
Today in photography class we had photographer Marty Katz stop by and talk to us about his job and show some of his work. He showed us images from his most recent assignment: photographing oysters for a New York Times article. The article hasn't been published yet, but I'll see if I can find a link to it tomorrow. He was interesting to listen to, and he also gave some good advice, like letting us know that drug dealers don't like photographers.

I don't usually write about my classes, but this one was cool because at the time Marty was also testing digital cameras for Wired Magazine. He passed out all of the cameras and let us shoot with them. I definitely need to get a digital SLR with all manual controls. I knew this before today, but now that I've actually used them, I really want one.

Here is a list of the cameras, but I don't think all of them were being tested:
Canon EOS 20D
Nikon Coolpix 5200, D2H, and D70
Sony L1 and V3
Casio S100 and P600

The Canon 20D and the Nikon D2H were really nice. Marty seemed to prefer Canon over Nikon, so I'll probably go Canon. I think the Digital Rebel might be a good choice for me, but I have to do some more research.
