Eric Idle, one of the original members of
Monty Python, came to Johns Hopkins as part of his traveling stage
show. The show was extremely funny, as one would expect. He did
sketches and songs, and at the end of the show, announced that a
Broadway version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail will open in 2004.
It will be called "Spamalot."
During the intermission, I had an idea. I could get my camera and laundry basket, and give Eric Idle an appropriately ridiculous RIDICULOUSLY LARGE Blue Bow Tie! I didn't have time to get it during intermission, so after the show, I ran all the way to the other end of campus, got my digital camera and laundry basket out from my room, and ran back to Shriver Hall. Idle was still there signing autographs, so I got in line. Nobody seemed to care that I was holding a laundry basket. I bought his book, The Road To Mars, and stepped up to his table. What I did next was probably a violation of the "no staged or posed photographs" rule that was posted in the lobby. As he signed the book, I moved the RIDICULOUSLY LARGE Blue Bow Tie into position. He looked up and asked what it was. I explained that it was a bow tie made out of a laundry basket. Still confused, he politely smiled while Bill took the picture. I thanked him for the show, and as we walked away, I heard him say to someone, "That was weird." Bill pointed out that it is quite an accomplishment to get one of the members of Monty Python to call me weird. |
