Are tomatoes good or bad?

I was in the cafeteria, eating vegetable soup. As I swallowed a piece of tomato, I looked up at the television, which was playing the local news. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I read a graphic that said "Tomatoes and Cancer." I watched closely, trying to figure out if they were reporting on how tomatoes prevent, treat, or even cause cancer, but I couldn't make a decision based on the visuals alone. If anyone knows if tomatoes are healthy, please let me know.
